Say What I Have to Say Including This Text You Are Reading without Leaving a Trace and Therefore Never Feel Threatened, 2018-19. Internet-based performance.
In November 2018, Wang Huimeng called for her followers on Weibo, a popular Chinese social media platform, to participate in her project. Each participant was asked to choose one word from the sentence “say what I have to say including this text you are reading without leaving a trace and therefore never feel threatened,” and have it tattooed on their bodies. They were also asked to take a photo of themselves with the tattoos in display, in a way where they feel most comfortable, creative, and represented. The post reached 700,000 Weibo users, and nearly 1,000 people signed up to participate, among whom twenty one were selected. They submitted the photos in the following month.
The project explores the possibilities and strength of a collective performance in the internet age. A message disseminates bodily and geographically, but is only complete when read in a full sentence. The narrative connects twenty one strangers in an intimate manner, and only ceases to exist when the last one among them decays.
